Beverly Patrick was the first person to visit with Red Cross caseworker, Jim Whitehouse, when he arrived at the Jesus Christ Church of Latter-day Saints in Centralia, Wash. The apartment complex in which she once lived on Pearl Street is no longer recognizable. Before the flood swept through the area earlier this week, Beverly and her mostly senior neighbors lived in what some would call the typical “grandma’s house.” Lace curtains, rocking chairs, floral arrangements and crocheted-blankets that once comforted their families now sit soaking wet in the corner, waiting for disposal. A line of mud parallels the wooden chair rails that once decorated their homes. With Jim’s help, Beverly and her neighbors will soon find a place to call home and start building new memories for them and their families.
